History of London

London, as the Phoenix, reborns anew from the ashes to live again. Since its Roman founding 2000 years ago it was destroyed three times . Londinium-the first settlement in 43 AD- lasted only 17 years; the Iceni tribe destroyed it completely. Later on, the Vikings attacked and forced the village to a new location behind the medieval walls. In 1665 a plague killed 70000 inhabitants and one year later a fire devastated a large area of the city. Rebuilding it took more than ten years and the works were led by the Architect Christopher Wren.
At the beginnings of the 20th century London was the largest city in the World. During Second Worls War , the bombardment of the city by the German Air Force caused death to 30000 people and destroyed large areas, rebuilt afterwards in different architectonic styles. The old City of London still keeps its medieval boundaries, but as time went by , the neighbouring districts and villages adjoined and transformed London today in one of the largest and busiest cities in Europe. Great London includes 13 administrative districts (boroughs): Kensington, Chelsea, City of Westminster, Camden, Islington, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Greenwich, Lewisham, Southwark, Lambeth, Wandsworth and City of London. London -the finantial capital city par excellence- sets trends, owns a great past, is vanguard at present and projects itself into the future , enough resons to afirm it is worth a visit.
